Traditional Shirodhara:
Shirodhara is an excellent relaxing method coming from Ayurvedic Indian traditional medical science more than 5.000 years old. It induces a state of profound physical and mental relaxation, leading to an experience of mental silence. By eliminating physical and mental stress, it rebalances both body and mind and is a great rejuvenating therapy that gives peace of mind, and physical and mental energy. In Sanskrit language Shirodhara is composed of two words: Shiro + Dhara. Shiro means head and Dhara means flow. Traditionally a lukewarm liquid flows on the forehead of a person lying on the back. Usually, the liquid used is sesame medicated oil. But many different types of liquids are traditionally used like: milk, decoctions, other oils, water. Research has shown that water is producing the same relaxing effect than oil.
Classically a patient lies down on his back on a wooden table. A coper pot containing lukewarm oil is suspended above his head. A hole in the pot lets the oil flow agreeably on the forehead and rapidly induces a deep Anti Stress and mental relaxation accompanied by a profound state of mental silence and bliss. A cloth protects the eyes of the patient so that the oil is not flowing into them, which would be irritating. A therapist usually stands in the back of the head of the patient. He may move the flow on the forehead and has to periodically recuperate the oil in a tin below the table in order to fill the pot again.
